Nina's India report for UNICEF

Nina had the opportunity to travel to southern India with UNICEF to make a report for "Världens Humorkväll", a benefit mixing humor and seriousness in order to raise money for the children of the world.

Nina's report from India airs as a part of the benefit gala today, April 7, at 19:30 on Swedish TV4.

The official press material reads:

"Singer Nina Persson from The Cardigans traveled with UNICEF to Chennai in southern India to meet families afflicted by the AIDS epidemic. 5.8 million people live with HIV in southern India - only South Africa has a higher number of infected people. Women and children are hard-hit by the epidemic - making up 40 percent of those living with HIV/AIDS in India.

Nina Persson traveled the rural areas south of Chennai, vising different villages where she met HIV-infected children and their families. They all receive help and support by a network supported by UNICEF. She met many different people. For instance, the big-sister taking care of her younger siblings, the man that had been cast out of his family and a very sick four-year-old little boy infected with HIV that still tried to joke around and cause some mischief. A lot of people told her about the social stigma that surrounds the disease and about how you can be completely cast-out if it becomes known that you carry it.

Nina Persson also got to see a touring show about HIV/AIDS supported economically by UNICEF. In this case the stage stood out in the open in a village where the residents gathered to see an entertaining play where the information about HIV/AIDS is ingeniously woven into the plot. The purpose of this is of course to raise the knowledge about the disease and how to protect yourself against it, something that too many people don't know much about."

About mixing humor with serious issues Nina herself says: "I believe you have to! To give both the humor and the seriousness more weight."
