I'm surprised how much fun you can have for free.
Aren't you?
It's like they're giving it away and not even caring.
Do you think that there is any value (no matter how small) measureable,
as you download and enjoy even bootlegs,(you loved them) you listen to them, are repeatedly entertained... For free.
You didn't buy a ticket, you didn't sweat hauling gear, you didn't live the life of an impoverished/wealthy musician pained to produce art?
The point is for all your drooling, quick hook-ups and rapidshare
orgasms it would be nice if it cost you a charitable penny or two to do so.
Next to nothing, almost... free.
But some pennies for those less fortunate. So one solution:
Arrange organized charity ads on your "share" blogs.

No, but usually, people downloading bootlegs have already spent a large amount of money buying every official release from the artist, T-shirts, tickets...

^Fair enough.
How does this affect a new generation of bands?

i wouldn't say usually. a majority of people download music are new listeners that grew up thinking it's all up there for grabs.

I can see there are collectors that want everything ever recorded by particular artists. But to say usually is stretching the truth..........by a lot.

It all depends on what we're talking about. We were talking about bootlegs, which means live recordings, studio rehearsals and so on, that will only be interesting for people who are true music fans and big record buyers, who want to dig deeper into their knowledge and love of a band.

On the other hand, if you're talking about people (usually young) downloading all kinds of music (that they could buy in a legal way) to fill their ipod for free, it's a totally different thing.

Right, so people get accustomed to getting something for nothing.

I just read that Coldplay want to give away free copies of their next cd
to concert goers on an upcoming tour.
However, they are looking into the legalities of that with their label, who must be furious with that idea.

Is that the future - free music, but pay ever larger concert ticket prices ?
