Hey Enrique!
This is what I could understand. I'm not sure in some parts tho.

Isle of the Colourblind

I've been transparent
I've been fluorescent
while I'm looking funny

I've been a sparrow
I've been a ferret (?)
I've been hiding for years
I've been so shallow
I've been so hollow
But well, you shut my sarrow

Chorus:
I've been caught on the Isle of the Colourblind
I've been caught so I don't know when
I've been caught on the isle of the Colourblind
I've been caught so now I don't know when

I've been so needy
I've been so weary (?)
But would you ever need me
I've been so sorry
I've been so worried
But well you shut my story

chorus

Hola Enrique! No. Para nada.

When 'I Sing Because Of You' was released, Magnus published some linernotes, and I still have them. So here's what he has to say:

'This is written by the eggstone, mainly their drummer Maurits I believe. I heard it way back when I worked at the Tambourine. I actually wrote the lyrics for them to use, which of course never happened. I asked for permission to record it and was happy to recieve and positive reaction from the guys in the band.
We did it at Tambourine well before we had all songs written, think we had four down on tape by then. We left it for a long time cause I never thought it would fit the record, we thought of it as a B side basically.
Jens jansson played drums along with some funky percussion by my friend Jon Rudberg. We had some troubles fitting the verses to the chorus, tempo wise. As you can hear, it gets a bit awkward right before the second verse. Not much to do about that, the up tempo choruses were so good that we wanted to keep them that way. I am perticulary happy with the vibes and the bass, as funky as I can get I suppose :-)
The lyrics about the wound up state I have been in for very long, possibly until winter 1998 when I stopped running. Isle of the colourblind is a metaphor for the lack of emotion one can get stuck in after years of running away from something. You run so fast, you can´t even smell the good in life, can´t even feel the beauty in an ordinary day-to-day moment. you become emotionally colourblind, just the size and look of things matter.'

And here are his official lyrics:

Isle of the colourblind
I've been transparent
I've been flourescent
While out looking for me
I've been a sparrow
I've been a pharaoe
I've been hiding for you
I've been so shallow
I've been so hollow
But will you share my sorrow?
I've been gone onto the Isle of the colourblind
And I've been gone so long I don't know when
I've been so needy
I've been so weary
But would you ever need me?
I've been so sorry
I've been so worried
But will you share my story?
I've been gone onto the Isle of colourblind
And I've been gone so long I don't know when

Here you are:

-Loved Among Friends

Here are the words:

Though I can´t see the good in me
I could never take your place
I would never stand the sight
To stand in front of me
Then someone´s on the telephone
Says; let´s hit Reflections Bar
I check my troubles at the door
Won´t need them anymore
I´m loved among friends
I hope that it never ends
Though I can see the good in grief
I learnt to know its face
It´s where I lost my faith
I started out this way
Now someone´s on the telephone
Says; let´s hit Reflections Bar
I left them bitches long ago
I´ll never let them know
I´m loved among friends
I hope that I´m loved among friends
I hope that it never ends
Though I won´t see the good in me
I see the good in you
Though you won´t see the good in you
You see the good in me
You should see the good in you
And I should see the good in me
You should see the good in you
And I should see the good in me

Magnus’ notes on the song:

Loved among friends is my favourite track but I never knew it’d turn out to be the first single. Peter from the Cardies joined me in the mastering studio up in Stockholm and as an honour; he was allowed to make a song order. We ended up keeping the major part of his suggestions, might he have a good ear for music?
Anyway, the songs were made in my bedroom studio along with all other songs. I think I wrote it back in April 2000. It used to have a waltz beat and spoken word lyrics until we started to record it at Tambourine.
Bengt did the first takes on the drums, playing gently with brushes. Along with the jumpy bass line that you can hear at the end of the song, we just couldn’t make it swing. The entire song collapsed and was put aside for quite some time. Later I decided to have another go down at LAB studios with Henrik Anderson. He’s far from being a drummer but then again, he’s not afraid of playing drums. He came up with the 4/4 beat and the pumping bass which gave the song a swing feel. Still it sounded a bit rubbish though I truly enjoyed the direction the song had taken. I decided to take it back to Tambourine and have Jens Jansson to play the drums.
There we decided to mix the 4/4 beat with the 6/8 beat which lead us to the final version. Henrik plays both guitar and bass, Patrik Bartosch plays the grand piano which carries the nice folky melodies.
This song is about the feeling you get sometimes, believing that everyone thinks you’re a looser and that you better get a one way trip to the city dump. This is most of the time not true, if you got true friends with great patience. Reflections Bar is our fave hide-out here in Malmö, a hotel bar round the corner where you never meet anyone you know. A perfect place for a secret date, if it wasn’t for its total lack of glamour and romance.
Nina and Nathan are the ones who always called me for a hit at Reflections. Thanks to them.....?

-View From A Satellite

You were so beautiful at such an ugly time, today
You were so beautiful, so untouchable, today
You say, I did you wrong
I did you wrong again
You were so beautiful
You made me understand
The measure of your heart
Won't hold the lot of me
You were so beautiful
You made me understand
I did you wrong
I did you wrong again
View from a satellite
View from a satellite
View from a satellite
You were so beautiful
You came to get your things
Today
Your secret loneliness will take you anywhere
I did no wrong
I did no wrong at all
View from a satellite
View from a satellite
View from a satellite
Did no wrong at all
I did no wrong, no wrong at all
View from a satellite
View from a satellite
View from a satellite
View from a satellite

Magnus’ notes on the song:

This one is from the first set of songs I wrote in my bedroom studio. I made the music not knowing what the vocal melody/lyrics would be like (as most songs on the record). I got the verse chords from Nina´s kidbrother Claes and then put in a bridge and a chorus. I seem to like two chord-verses or choruses, unlike the Cardigans musical language.
Unlike most other songs, I wrote this on guitar. I am quite crap on guitar but I can get around whenever I need to. The demo didn´t include the mandolins obviously, but apart from that, it sounds exactly as it did back in the demo days.
The lyrics is kinda straight on target, when my ex girl came to get her things and we exchanged christmas presents a month after her breaking up. It was a very dreadful afternoon.
It´s a very simple recording, drums by Jens, I play the hammond organ, batti playing the slide guitar and the mandolins (he had to work on those). Then Helena came in later to do the dreamy background vocals= done!

-No More Love

Only you can make it right again
Only you can make it right
No more love until I find you
No more love until I find you
Till I find you
Only you can make it right again
Only you can make it right
No more love, no more love
No more love, no more love
Till I find you...
I wish I could turn, try to turn back time
Fix all the errors that were mine
I let myself hang on to
I never felt a deeper love
How I wish you felt the same
I'll never feel the same again
All them people try to talk me through
That you were never being kind to me
Once I think of you, once I think of you
Yeah
No more love, no more love
No more love, no more love
Till I find you...

Magnus’ notes on the song:

This I did very quickly in my bedroom studio. Due to my great love of 70´s roots reggae and dub, I felt I had to do something moody dubwise. The demo version is even more monotonic, nothing happens for some 3 and a half minutes, same chords throughout the entire song.
When I played it to Henrik, he fooled around with the arrangement, changed the chord progress a bit and gave it new harmonies on the chorus. The original is of course what you hear in the verses, steady bass with very little else going on. We recorded the first version with me playing drums, then Henrik cut it up in weird loops. We added a lot of loops, courtesy of Nathan but kept the rest of the LAB recordings. Mikael Ilbert made a stripped down mix which we liked, we just thought he had excluded too many of our darlings. Therefore we let Marco Manieri do a dubmix which is included on the album.
The song is about obsessions, the way you might glamourize someone you once had, or never really got. The love you would possibly have gotten there would overcast every other relation, in the future and in the past. Of course this is not true, but I am a sucker for these kind of fantasies.

-Righteous Boy/Righteous Girl

Righteous girl justifies, she knew her part wasn't meant to last
Righteous boy petrified, stoned to the ground into her past
She aimed to be the glossy kind
To make her past yellow time by time
The girl has come to end, everything
The girl has come to end, everything
The girl has come to end, everything
Righteous girl justifies, she knew her part wasn't meant to last
Righteous boy petrified, stoned to the ground into her past
She couldn't see the harm she's done
Cause she never hurt anyone
The girl has come to end, everything
The girl has come to end, everything...

Magnus’ notes on the song:

This was the very first song I wrote after my 6 year creative sleep. It was made as a slow bossanova with a very nice single note piano thing in the choruses. This has been transferred to the strings on the new version.
I never found a place for the song in its original version so me and Henrik had a discussion of what to do with it. Out of nowhere, this crazy bassline comes out of my head and then it took off in a totally different direction.
We did the drums, bass and guitars down at the Cardigans rehearsal space. My drumming and the loops made out of it wouldn´t really hold the song together so Nathan was called in to program some additional drums and simply fuck up the rhythm tracks. The freaked out mid part is all his work.
The lyrics are quite simple, though I am very pleased with "she aimed to be the glossy kind to make her past yellow time by time". Maybe sometime, I´ll record the original version of the song. I am still amazed how it came out, very differently from where it all started. This is where I got my artistname from obviously.

-I Made It Hard For You To Love Me

Never knew for sure what my intentions were
Must have wanted you
Must have been alone
The first time you took me in
I felt overwhelming gratitude
How was I supposed to feel
I made it hard for you to love me...
How could I behave in any other way
Still I felt afraid at a shattered time
I tried to hide my fears
I got the same result through every try
Oh dear, I wonder why
I made it hard for you to love me...
Never knew for sure what my struggles were
That I learnt to know
That I'm not to count
You poke me at my weakest spots
Cursed me at my lowest point
So, is it you or really me
That made it hard for you to love me...

Magnus’ notes on the song:

This one has caused me more headache than all other songs all together. I had the chorus thing clear to me for so long. I tried many different verses and melodies until I settled with this one. As many other of my songs, it just has two parts. because it took so long time to finish it, I never got to love it as I did with the other songs.
As you can hear, I really push myself as high as possible in the vocal range, higher than I´d rather have it actually. A nice twist is that the chorus melody changes throughout the song. Another thing is that I use tremolo on the bass, which makes it nice and blurry.
We did this down at the rehearsal space aswell and then added Jens´drums and Filip´s strings on top. Nathan came in at the end to give me a push for those high pitch notes.
The lyrics is again, straight and rather autobiographial. I suppose this was my try on making a Dusty Springfield like grand ballad, you tell me if I even got close…

-All My Evils

So, I've worn you out
I turned my will against you
Just to let it bleed
I lost all my compassion
God, I lost myself in you
I wish I could have stayed
Steady as a rock, won't let it show
All my evils must go
Steady as a rock, won't let it show
All my evils must go
Though I choke through many times
I kept it all inside me
I thought I'd find a way
Through my obsessions
God, I lost myself in you
I wish I could have stayed
Steady as a rock, won't let it show
All my evils must go
Steady as a rock, won't let it show
All my evils must go...
So, will I ever change
I wish I'd found a better self
A simpler self
An easy self for I lost myself in you
Steady as a rock, won't let it show
All my evils must go
Steady as a rock, won't let it show
All my evils must go...
Rock… Steady… Rock… Steady… Rock… Steady...

Magnus’ notes on the song:

After getting in contact with batti, I used him as a test on my new songs. He really loved this one when it was still instrumental. It took him a lot of time to actually enjoy the vocal melody, because it puts the sweet vibraphone melody out of focus.
Strangely, the melody sounds fine straight through the song. It´s the same notes in the verse and in the chorus, a very simple even childish melody. The verse´s in A flat major- G minor, which to me is strange, maybe just business as ususal for you?
The lyrics are a mix of regret of how I treated people near me and a wish for a change of manners. This hasn´t very much to do with ex girlfriends actually! :) Or has it?
A nice twist is the end which I owe to Aretha Franklin, you know "Rocksteady" ?

-I´m Not Shielded

I'm not shielded like you are
I'm not shielded like you are, like you are
I wish I was sometimes
I'm not shielded like you are, like you are
And it makes me happy

Magnus’ notes on the song:

I thought I needed a piece to give the listener some air halfway through the album. In the vinly age, this break would come naturally from flipping the record over from side A to side B. Some say it´s a bit psychadelic, might just be my crappy guitarplaying.
Henrik did all intruments on this down at the rehearsal space, including the strange violin parts which are looped and reversed. Notice the teasy glockenspiel melody in the middle. Strange song indeed.
The lyric is about certain people who seem to keep everything that´s not superficial away from themselves, just like I used to do back in the days. Still such an approach makes day to day life easier, at least it seems that way for a while.

-Elephant Man

Keep looking at me, keep looking at me
Keep looking at me, keep looking at me
Don't you feel ashamed
You came to see the elephant man
The elephant man
Don't you be afraid
It's plain to see the elephant man
The elephant man...

Magnus’ notes on the song:

I suppose this reveals my indie-pop self? As a huge fan of Ride, Charlatans and Stone Roses back in the days of pre-Cardigans years, this came about as a My Bloody Valentine rip-off.
The first couple of songs I wrote were a little bit moodier, such as I feel apart, Lone among friends, then the straight soul ballad types that came in later. Anyway, this stood out completely then and it still does. Since I couldn´t come up with any complete lyric that was any good, I just kept on repeating "keep looking at me" over and over till I decided to stay with it.
I quite often come up with a title first, so the thing with elephant man made this complete itself pretty fast. I guess the metephor of the elephant man is sort of self pity, blame and hatred mixed up. Of course directed at a very special someone.
Bengt from cardigans played drums on this one first, but we realized that it needed the toughness from programmed drumsloops. When we play this one live, it goes more into Charlatans groove than the white-noise MBV stylee that appears on record. I also get to play the melodica live.
The voice at the end is a guy called Juan, who´s Argentinian. Him and I wrote some phrases/curses in spanish of which I can´t tell you. Let´s just say, he ain´t saying any nice stuff.

-I Feel Apart

What a lot to feel, as neon lights glow
The steady flow
Throughout the ordinary
So, what's left to feel
When I'd hate the sight of me
So, what's left to know
What is yet to show
I feel apart
But I try and I try
Nothing is for sure
But I try and I try
I feel apart
But I try and I try for you
What a large defeat
When I'm measured there beside you
Such indifference
Aren't we treasured there inside you
Got a lot to deal with
Afraid to see you
Afraid I never knew you
You never knew me
I feel apart
But I try and I try
Nothing is for sure
But I try and I try
I feel apart
But I try and I try for you
A walk into the woods where no one ever goes
Where no one ever went
I strive towards the end
Not much left to do
And not much left to ask for
It's better than before
I'll go through this alone
I feel apart
But I try and I try
Nothing is for sure
But I try and I try
I feel apart
But I try and I try for you

Magnus’ notes on the song:

This was possibly the first one I wrote that actually sounded like a real tune, in an interesting style. The demo sounds like a gothic Massive Attack, very similar to the album version. It also has a mid-8 segment, the first one I ever wrote! It will always be batti´s fave song, maybe because it´s been there since the very beginning.
We had so much trouble with this one cause it was recorded on tape, not directly into computer. The live drums we recorded didn´t work out so we chose to program drum loops. Then we discovered that the meter wasn´t correct, the taperecorder had been slightly out of pitch. I don´t envy Stefan who had to fix the rhythm track manually for ages till it actually worked out. This was the first one me and batti recorded, back in Sep 2000.
I remember being so proud of that recording, guess we both needed that to feel that this could become a real recording project. It´s a bit tricky to go from the low whispery voice to the high note chorus in a blink. I´m always nervous to catch awkward notes when I sing this one live.

Lone Among Friends

Would you say that I aimed too high
If she knew what choice I had
Would you settle for a lesser try
If you'd fail to be glad
Would you worry if the years went by
With a sense of a silent cry
Would you rather wait around to die
Or would you rather know why
Would you know when the time is right
When I've hurt myself enough
Would you keep me at a safer spot
And praise what I got
Don't you ever feel the greatest loss
Of what you had or never got
Would you stutter if you hurt a lot
Or would you shut off
You're lone among friends
You fail to be glad in the old fashionable way
You're lone among friends
You're lone among friends
You don't know how to think
Don't know how to feel
You're lone among friends
It's never happened before...

Magnus’ notes on the song:

This sounds like a gothic AIR song. It´s probably the bassline that carries the similarity. This sounded exactly the same on demo, so we just copied the playing when we got into Tambourine studios.
This was also recorded on tape which is why the beat is like seaweed. I love the vibraphone and melodica melodies in this one and maybe it sounds good just because of the drowsiness. Henrik´s massive background vocals are truly great, but we had to hide it a little, other wise my lead vocals would have drown.
The lyric actually breathes a bit of angriness. it´s sort of an explanation of how one can feel when emotions and fear set in. Sort of a reflection on how to dignify one´s precious situation when there´s a lot to feel.
Although it might be the least catchy song on the record, it´s one of my favourites. It was one of the very first songs I wrote in my bedroom studio.

Straight Song

Will I feel this cold in a year or two
Will I feel this cold when I'm old
These uncertain days
Feelings out of place
Through despair and doubt
Will it even out
There's an ocean between
What you perceive and how I feel
I reason differently
But if you could see me through and if I let you to
I got lots of lots of love for you
Equal blessing, equal curse
Will I grow from here
Or to the worse
This uncertain deal
How I'd rather feel
When I cease to be, how will you remember me
There's an ocean between
What you perceive and how I feel
I reason differently
But if you could see me through and if I let you to
I got lots of lots of love for you
I got lots of lots of love for you
I got lots of lots of love for you
There's an ocean between
What you perceive and how I feel
I reason differently
But if you could see me through and if I let you to
I got lots of lots of love for you
I got lots of lots of love for you
I got lots of lots of love for you...

Magnus’ notes on the song:

This was ignored a long time, wasn´t really meant to be on the record at all. Not until I made it into a soul-bluesy song. Before it was kind of dark, gothic and less pleasant.
The title comes from the fact that it`s straight with no twist, no surprising parts in it. It was one of the first four songs I wrote and I really like it nowadays. I am real happy with the lyrics, not that it´s great literature but it breathes of some hope at the end of the tunnel.
We recorded this one late, possibly the last one to be completed at Tambourine Studios. Jens came in to do the drums really quickly and then Per and Patrik from eggstone played bass/electric piano. Henrik made a background-vocal arrangement for Helena which reminds me of Annie Lennox for some reason. I really like Patrik´s freaky piano solo, seems that all his solos on my record has been sort of tacky-lounge style. Batti and I think they fit, Patrik seem to laugh about it.
Everyone I´ve played the record to have their own fave songs but no one seems to favour this one. At least I tried for once to sing the blues…

You Better Do Good

You better do good while you can
You better do good for your fellow man
I have seen it slip right through
Through my palms away for good
Cause no one's here to claim your will
You're free to do what's there for you
You better do good while you can
You better do good for your fellow man
You better do good if you want someone to hold
You better do good before you're bitter and alone
There's no defeat in feeling small
Our fall is shorter than the tall
They will find it slip right through
Through their palms away for good
You better do good while you can
You better do good for your fellow man
Cause they are gonna fall someday
Just wait and see, just wait and see
Ever so patiently
Then someone will take their place
It's their defeat eternally
Just aim at the stars, stay who you are
Just aim at the stars, be what you are...

Magnus’ notes on the song:

This was the last one to be written for the record. I know it´s a little out of place. Batti always pictures me as the Reverend in an american church, when listening to this tune. Guess it´s the only message song I will ever write, I actually came to think that Cardigans never done any of this kind either.
Some people love this song, like my dad and some think it´s sort of rubbish. We had troubles to find out whether it´d be ok to not have a real chorus in it.
The grand background vocals by Helena had always been the thing for the B part and I just couldn´t find a strong melody line to go with it. After a few months we decided to keep it the original way, but we cut the bridge thing and made it into the last chorus/outro vocals. We should never consider doing this live, we´d only fail to copy the choir parts. Michael the mixer thought that some Memphis style horns would lift the song so we recorded these at the end of the mix period and along with it, added new drums.
The lyric is pretty obvious but I won´t tell you to whom it´s aimed at. It could be myself…

Isle Of The Colourblind
