LEWISTON, Maine -- Muslim men praying at an Islamic center in Maine said they were shocked when someone threw a severed pig's head into the mosque.

Witnesses told the Sun Journal of Lewiston that a frozen pig's head slightly larger than a basketball was rolled into the Lewiston Auburn Islamic Center Monday night.

Pigs are considered unclean by Muslims, who are barred from eating pork, and the act was viewed as a deliberate insult against the religion.

When the incident occurred, about 40 men were bowed down as part of their prayer ritual. When the pig's head rolled in, the men got up and ran outside. None of them was hit by the animal head.

Well, I would have ran out too. Who knows if they would have thrown in something a bit more dangerous than a pig's head afterwards. :P

^ Well it is very possible that someone just threw in the head and it didn't actually hit anyone... just hit the ground in front of them. Actually, from a completely probabilistic point of view, I'd be surprised if it hit anyone.

That doesn't surprise me at all. I live in an area that has the highest muslim population in the chicago land area. After 9/11, people by the thousands marched on the local mosque. It took the state police and police from 6 different townships to control the crowd. The police even used the parking lot of a local mall as their base of operations, the mob was that big. Arab owned businesses and personal property were vandalized and destroyed. Arabs were even physically attacked. They even found bullet holes in the mosque. Can you imagine the kind backlash that would be inflicted on the arab community at large if there were another 9/11 like attack?

Hey ookla, that was an anomaly, nothing really happened in the rest of the country, there might be a few knuckleheads in the country that maybe attacked a few people, but nothing significant.

Even if another attack happened, Americans still wouldnt inflict random attacks on muslims, our country is not like that.

^ But your country is very big though. I agree that they seem to be isolated incidents but they do happen.

I don't know about that. Hate crimes towards arabs have risen since 9/11.

I understand that.
Arabs did much to develop mathematics. Today many students suffer because of these arabs.

They rose from single digits to double digits after 9/11, but trust me we would have heard of it from the media, which would love to make America look bad. You know the media, anything to make America look bad, despite being Americans themselves.

Americans have actually bent over backwards to show Arabs and Muslims extra good care, remember the letter writing campaign the president initiated? That American kids would write letters to Muslim children in Afghanistan and also contribute $1 per letter as well so that it would buy supplies for the kids over there.

Anyway, like I said with the exception of a few knuckleheads nothing has happened over here.

CAIR: Pig’s Head Thrown Into ME Mosque During Prayers
CAIR calls for stepped up outreach to educate about Islam

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/4/06) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called for stepped up outreach efforts by the Muslim community in Maine after a severed pig’s head was thrown into one of that state’s mosques during prayers.

CAIR said the frozen pig's head was rolled into the Lewiston Auburn Islamic Center late Monday as worshipers bowed in prayer. The Washington-based Islamic civil rights and advocacy group said the use of pigs or pork products is a favorite theme of Islamophobic bigots who wish to attack or insult Muslims. Muslims are prohibited from eating pork.

A 33-year-old Lewiston man told police on Tuesday that he had thrown the head into the mosque. He was charged with desecration of a church, a misdemeanor, and is out on bail.

“All Americans should be able to offer prayers in their houses of worship without fear of attack or intimidation,” said CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge Muslims in Maine to increase their outreach efforts to educate people of other faiths about Islam.”

Hooper suggested a mosque open house and participation in CAIR’s “Explore the Quran” and “Explore the Life of Muhammad” campaigns. SEE: www.explorethequran.org and www.cair.com/Muhammad

He said CAIR’s research shows that anti-Muslim prejudice decreases when people get to know ordinary Muslims and when they have access to accurate information about Islam.

Lewiston is home to some 2,500 Somali Muslim refugees. Somalis began moving to the state in 2001 in search of safer streets and cheaper housing. In 2002, the mayor of Lewiston set off a national controversy by asking Somali community leaders to stop the influx.

CAIR, America's largest Muslim civil liberties group, has 32 offices, chapters and affiliates nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

^ I don't think that has to do with the discussion. What we're talking about here is the harrassment of american muslims in the USA, irrespective of that the USA is doing abroad.

It was disrespectful to the people attending the prayers this stupid act by a thoughtless person.
In my city not long ago in a well-to-do neighborhood racists spray painted anti-semitic graffiti on driveways and houses of Jews.
These incidents go on all the time, all over America and Canada, to just about any ethnic group... It will take time for old hatreds to slowly die.
It's a sad reflection of our times that churches have to lock their doors, that security is an issue at any place of worship.

You're also an intellectual, who cannot spell someone's name correctly Samuel. You do have such a knack for intelligent debates too, without resorting to vulgarities. Since vulgarities are a sign of only uncivilized, mindless, miscreants, you surely wouldn't stoop to such low levels, now would you?

I would like to think that I'm one of the reasons why America will remain great, she needs patriots like myself from allowing the haters (inside&outside the country like yourself) from destroying the country.

Why is patriotism a good thing?

Why isn't it? Being proud of the country you are from is a good thing, believing in your country is a great thing, be it supporting the president, the national sports teams, academic accomplishments, charitable donations by private and public sector to help the poor, whats not to like about patriotism.

Look all the countries that were proud and supported their national football team sin the world cup, whats wrong with that?

A country without patriots is bound to fail horribly

Wrong, nothing.

But let’s look at patriotism from the point of view of an American living in British colonial times. Would it have been good back then if everyone in America followed their leader (the King of England) as blindly as you do George W. Bush? Even from an American's perspective, it would have not. So why should everyone have to do what the ruling government wants? Should Ireland have followed what the British government wanted from us? Should the French of the 1700's have followed what the French government wanted? I don't think so. And who do you suppose was on the front lines of those respective conflicts? The patriots? That's doubtful.

And I doubt there's any evidence either way to back up your claim that only patriots give money to charities. But judging from the type of people who work for the charities ...
