Hi

I rarely post but this cover version has made me want to scream. Here is the link for the video btw (which bears no relevance to the song at all and is like a crappy mobile phone advert).

Poor Cardigans, this woman has destroyed one of your greatest songs. I wish it was you releasing it instead.

PS. What's with her voice? can she not sustain a note? It's embarrassing to hear

the video is awful. they totally misunderstood the communication concept. and changing the first line to 24 years is only one of the bad ideas. all my good memories of communication from the year 2003, almost died:(

When I heard this cover first time at HMV, music store that I work in I thought I'd take a lunch break asap. Somebody should be ashamed for making such a oh-so-sweet-and-all-in-pink-crap from such a great song.
I've just watched the video and... what the hell is that? Looks like some insurance company advert. Grrr...

I tell you now like I told you before: this is a bad cover! And the video isn't any better.
Hopefully, one day some artist or band will make a decent Cardie-cover :)

I just watched the video. I feel used. It's like suddenly noticing a really ugly side to a good friend's personality.

I told them what I thought of it in their forum.
They have a stern disclaimer saying they will act firmly against any abusive or upsetting behaviour.
I wanted to say that I will act firmly against any abusive or upsetting cover versions, but chickened out. I also stopped short at demanding a open letter to all Cardigans fans apologising for her pretty much ruining a beautiful song.

I know I shouldn't get worked up about it, but jeeze, that cover is crapola of the highest order!

Well...
Surely the Cardigans will laugh "behind their moustache" (italian saying..) about that singer and her cover song.

But, I mean, in another hand the existence of this cover is fantastic for the Cardies!! All the royalties and stuff.. eh!
They will earn some good money from that. And that's fantastic: earning money from a shitty cover of your beautiful masterpiece :)

To me the song sounds funny! It shows the idea of some Usa americans about "making a euro-song"...
There is a little awful keyboard sound that probably just Dido will still use in her songs... hahahaha

And probably that keyboard sound makes the producers of Laura thinking "ooh, yeah man.. this sounds like the Piazza Navona and glass of beer at night in Paris, Germany.. great maaaan"

This world...

Ah! Just saw the video...
Gosh! Once I was travelling by train, going from Helsinki to Tampere.. Everything was white... Long white lands, tall trees... almost a no-life landscape. Because I had a videocamera and I was listening to Cardigans.. I put the earphone near the camera's microphone and I did my personal live-video of Communication... Just trees and white empty lands... It was pure emotional to me.

This is totally the opposite! Which is ok, thinking about how many different thoughts a good song can offer...
BUT! That's not the right video and lights and smiles and bloody "european fruits" for a song like Communication!!

Gosh... How can I even explain my personal vision of the video to the singer? She will think "oh, yeah... Helsinki, In Russia... Great... Do you get hot water over there?"

Ha ha ha...
This world (n.2) ...

Erhm...
The Laura Whatever she's called cover it's just a lazy copy of Communication.
Cardigans covered Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in a more interesting way!!
And from the ideas of two heavy metal guys who wants just to EVOLVE into pop melodies :)

There's nothing more funny than "metal hard rock" guys who "hates" melodies.
Reminds me a lot the same "crappy being a man theory" of those british guys who don't want admit that outside is freezin', and so they are still wearing shorts and t-shirts...

That's pretty ironic that Beastie Boys fans would be so upset over a Black Sabbath cover. Especially when one considers the Beastie Boys' hatchet jobs on some Zeppelin tunes (not that Zeppelin has never * ahem * rippped anyone off... :-)).

I don't really expect many Beastie Boys fans would appreciate the Cardigans (maybe some do), but I'll bet there aren't a ton of Zeppelin fans who like the Beastie Boys either. I don't.

for the few i've heard well, it's not an interresting cover, the work on the sound is espeaceally made to be put on a chartbox..
it's too nothing to talk about it, but i'll hope it gonna work the best it available for these version.. some i know do not relly need money, but it's a nice compensation for knowing this version of one of their song to not be enjail into a deep castle far away in a deep forest..
no really monstruous, simply ininterresting..

Hey! That's alright... I don't really care for the Beastie Boys (at least I haven't since I was about 11 years old - which is quite a long time ago), but if you're a Cardigans fan, then one can't be all bad!

It just bugs when I hear what sound like "When the Levee Breaks" and then all of a sudden some guy starts rapping about "Rhymin' and Stealing".

But I don't like rap in general, so it's nothing against the Beastie Boys in particular.

Hi this is Nina.

Don't be cruel! It's quite amazing to hear about people covering songs that you wrote and love. It doesn't happen every day to us!

XOXO

^ Of course it's a great acknowledgment. And we're very happy for you! :-) But ultimately it's still like.... aaaah, I wish she would have done something with it. Don't you think so? The song merits so much! It's like... I guess to you your songs are like "children", or at least many songwriters put it that way... but for me your songs are like friends. And this particular cover is like a dear friend of yours went out and got this boyfriend/girlfriend that maybe doesn't really suit him/her and you think.... ah, they can do better! But you still let them live their own life kind of...

I make no sense...

i heard ania(a polish singer) cover of charlie charlie. it was translated to polish language and quite wonderful. of course cover versions are lovely, but this one's just too commercialized.

Actually, I cover Cardigans songs all the time (if you count sitting around my house playing my guitar and singing a cover.) So in that sense, it does happen about everyday!

But, yeah, it's like I said earlier - even if the cover isn't that good at least she has good taste!

agreed with Bac on this one. i think that lots of us do cardigans covers, sometimes every day (loose interpretation of the term) even if it's just for our ourselves or some friends who are willing to listen to us play guitar and sing.

i would say that what rankles me, at least, is when some silly pop upstart tacks a Cardigans cover (or any cover, really, by a band that is still active) onto an album of their work and then has the nerve to issue it as A FIRST SINGLE. would cardigans have ever done a black sabbath cover-single? a bruce springsteen cover-single?

Laura Michelle Kelly has every right to cover songs that she truly likes, that she thinks she can positively enhance by re-recording, and that she imagines she will benefit from professionally.. i have no issue with that. i just think that it's kinda shady from a ethical perspective.

oh and Laura Michelle Kelly, if you are totally a Cardigans superfan reading this thread right now, i totally apologize.

and i love your song!

I still haven't heard it, but ...
If the cover does well and sells, then at least Nina and Peter get some royalties. And maybe it might get some people interested in the Cardigans.

I remember when the Cardigans teamed up with Tom Jones and many Cardigan fans weren't too thrilled about it. And they complained that they hated the whole ordeal.
And even though it's my least favorite cover that they've done (I like the original a lot) it's not like it was that bad.

I know my "covers" of their songs when I'm sitting around with my guitar aren't particularly brilliant, so that's why I'm not going to be too critical of it even if I didn't think it was that good.
