Hello Sports fans, I just watched my National football team The Republic of Ireland being made a complete fool of by Holland in an international friendly match in Dublin during the week. The score was Holland 4 - 0 ROI. After failing to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, now we are pinning our hopes on getting through to the Euro cup in 2008 and begin our first qualifying match in 2 weeks against Germany. We dont stand a chance.

well thats all I have to say about that. If you have anything to add to this please do.

Viva wet hairy italian football players and their corrupted as hell teams!!

Yes, you're right, I was making a mockery of your fine thread, sorry... :o
You know, being italian you can do two things:

Close your eyes and support passionately a team
Open your eyes and feel the filth of football

I'm glad you're Irish!! :D

lol...Well I think its disgracefull about the curruption, but those teams where taught a lesson, maybe it wont happen again. Surely not all Italian footballers have that wet hair look, but hey they are The World Champions they can be forgiven for any wet hair or curruption.
I admire your free thinking and your passion for the figure iceskating, but come on man thats never going to be the world sport. Jump on the football band wagon allways room for one more.

and Irish football needs a serious kick in the ass. We had our day in Italy in 1990 where squillaci broke our hearts and sent us home after Italy beat us 1 - 0

good times, good times

You could always call one of the gaelic sports tournaments a World Series and be world champions in that...

You have been invaded by Canal + ? Sorry.
This is the problem with soccer. You pay a lot of money to watch the match. They give a part of it to players (who do not deserve that much money).
And a big part remains in the hand of private companies. When they have enough money, they can invade another country. Probably Canal + will move a bit further soon.
I don't care that much, it is just soccer.
It is interesting. Where can go Canal + when all countries are covered by Canal + (or equivalent companies) ?

Can I say something?

It's a sport where people kick a ball with the foot. So... Why call it soccer???
It's football... it's damn FOOT BALL!!

In Italy we call it "calcio", which at least means "kick"...

Why soccer ?
Simple.
Because that does not sound English, soccer sounds like nothing at all. Let's go for calcio if you prefer.

"Soccer" is a short version of "association football", which is different from rugby football, american football, australian football, gaelic football, etc, although most of the other types of football use hands more than feet.

At least rugby doesn't tend to bother with its full name - but for the other countries, soccer is used to avoid confusion with the local football. In French, they call it "foot" (and basketball is "basket" but handball is "handball"...). Go figure...

Eh yep, there's a huge possibility for dissapointment if you follow Finland into the qualifiers. But hey, you can cry into your pint along with me as I'm following Ireland!!

Erhm...
I'll try this one.

Soccer = association football, in short. Ok, wow, I didn't know that. Fine!
Football = probably a sport involving a round thing and some feet, MOSTLY.

Like...

Fiesta diesel = a type of car, a kind of car, yeah!
Automobile/car = a vehicle with an engine, wheels etc...

So:

Have you never heard somebody saying "ok, I'll come to take you tonight with my Fiesta Diesel" , but then driving maybe a Ferrari or a 500 (=cinquecento-lovely-) ??
Maybe we hear saying "I'll wait you in my car" (or automobile, why not!)

SO!
..Can you here saying, for example "do you wanna come tonight playing with me some association football?" (maybe it's about office work?! Or planning the next year teams??)
Surely sounds better and clear if you say "do you wanna play some football?" and full stop. :)

But then, Laaran, if it's just something about/against the english people/language... yaaawn... frankly that's a BIT boring :)

Personal opinions, eh!

I feel electricity... It's over my atlas... Pages between Britain, France and Italy!!

But, ok, lets pass my boredom to the bin.
But.. Was it "right" or was it "wrong" my "explanation" above?

Soccer sounds silly... and it has an awful pronunciation sound... sounds like "sucka" in deep americanenglish... It's just wroooooong!!
