hey,i am here asking for your opinions on the lyrics of "for what its worth"...there is "four letter word"in the lyrics which i think refers to "love"while my friend thinks its "f***".we are not native speakers,so may some of you give us your opinions?With many thanks |

oh...but i think if you see between lines...it was telling a gal who even dare say dirty words while dare not say love to the one she really cares.Doesnt it? or i got misunderstanded? thanks anyway for you opinions! |

I'm pretty sure the word is "love". The whole song is wrapped around the phrase:
"For what it's worth - I love you."
So you would be correct (in my opinion). Of course, I didn't write the song so I could be wrong, but I'm just considering the context. |

I can't see the word being 'fuck'. Nina wouldn't use any Anglo saxon in a song. Apart from the word 'shit' in Good Morning Joan. |

I think it's "love" only that it's "dirty-fied" love because of the 4-letter word connotation. Usually "4-letter word" means that it's a curseword so the sentiment for me is that Nina wants to say that love is a dirty word... which it is. ;-) Without it having to be fuck. |

the four letter word ever symbolise fuck, it's a nice way to use this word when you're a polite american women, with a good good christian education..
that kind of crappy word should not be into the mouth of a young lady.. ever prefer to use "the four letter words" instead of fuck or shit, or some nice other as dick or cock or slut.. anyway,
and use "the three letter word" when you have to said "bip" witch is the most crappy of all.. remember it, if you want to be nice and fair do not use crappy bad awfull words.. ;) it's so baaad..
it's a nice utilisation of these metaphore, or periphrase<-(french)
goes perfectly with the sensitive part of love and how to talk about love in these most funny ways.. :D |

there are several song in pop history named 'love is a four letter word, f.e. by bob dylan, squeeze and all 4 one.
the first one that came to my mind is a song from roy budd, from the get carter soundtrack, released 1971
and the chorus goes somewhat like this:
look inside your dictionary
to tell you what that word could be
but nothing in your dictionary
can describe what this word would mean
love is a four-letter word
plus there's a song by cake that is called
friend is a four-letter word
these examples are both by native english speakers, so it doesn't necessarily have to be fuck
personally i think in the case of for what it's worth the word is love. for me the song is about a relationship basing only on sexual needs and when feelings enter it, everything goes wrong and it cannot be continued. so the fact that one person falls in love with the other one ruins the intimacy the two shared before. |

Thanks so much for you guys! i kinda got the idea~ actually i realized we dont have to give an definite word to fit that 4-letter-word,right? its on how you understand the whole lyris...it's just a kind of feeling on the realtionships.Personally i agree with -berlin- and daniel_o...Anyway,everyone has his/her own interpretation of the lyris...that is no standard right or wrong on that...i guess...thanks again for your ideas~ you are all nice the-cardigans-fans! |
