Hmm...I don't think it's weird at all. Maybe it's the first time you're listening to Bjork?? I think my favorite songs are Triumph Of A Heart and Desired Constellation.
No idea where you can find live songs from her, just google it.

Medúlla is a beautiful album.

i think what fede refers to as 'strange' is the fact that there are no instruments on this album, only human voices. i guess in that sense it is a strange album and yeah, a very beautiful one.
my favourite is desired constellation, too!

It's strange in the sense of there is no instruments, and some songs are strange shouts and voices, with no rythim at all. just shouts! like ancestors, e.g.
I've GT too!, so I've listen to Bjork before... and I can say that this new songs are so different than the others!
and in which language it's written "medulla" and "vokuro"????

icelandic, i guess

some of the shouts you mentioned were sung by a greenlandic singer. i think its called throat singing, and its a kind of greenlandic folk tradition, the ancestor reference is right ;-)

instruments abound on this record. it kinda makes me mad when people call this Björk's a'cappella record. i mean, listen to 'Mouth's Cradle:' it starts with sine-wave synths and computer-processed vocals from björk, and is then immediately transitioned into the rhythm section-driven verse (courtesy of Rahzel and dokaka). I've seen Rahzel live and if his voice isn't an instrument, i don't know what is.

'Desired Constellation' is another fine example. i'm not a huge Radiohead fan, but no one called 'Kid A' an a'cappella album although his voice was in the front of the mix on most tracks.

hm, this is kinda strange. i just checked the booklet, and it says piano was used on two songs: oceania (er, yes, of course..) and ancestors. and you're of course right about the synth sound in desired constellation, but i remember this album was advertised as being "vocals only" even by björk herself.

The piano is a typo on "Oceania". There is a piano version of "Oceania" (which was made first) and somehow that credit snuck into the non-piano version - the one on the album. Otherwise, yes - there is a piano on "Ancestors" and a gong on "Pleasure Is All Mine". All the rest are voices. "Medúlla" is actually an "exhibition" of sorts of what you can do with the human voice. On "Desired Constellation" all the sounds in the beat are actually sampled from Björk's own "Hidden Place" voice track and compressed to make up the typical microbeats of Ensemble. So no instrument sounds there. Kid A is different 'cause the sounds originate from instruments, not Thom's voice no matter how high up in the mix it is. (There is also a choir version of Desired Constellation using no processed voices but ultimately Björk liked the Ensemble-beats version better.)

Whether or not Dokaka or Rahzel can be considered instruments is another question. ;) I wouldn't call "Medúlla" an a capella album either 'cause on most tracks the vocals are processed but it is all voices except the two sounds on "Ancestors" and "Pleasure Is All Mine". Believe it or not. Then the video version of "Who is It" uses bells but that's nother story.

Medulla is absolutely the most artistic part of Björk's carreer.

Owww, Medulla.. I love it.

Desired Constellation and Vokuro are my favourites.

I heard that they only used instrumants on Desired Constellation but not only vocals.

It's so sad that people could not realise it's worth.

^ Oceania, Who Is It and Triumph of a Heart are the only "regular" music videos 'cause those were the three singles.

Where Is the Line has a video directed by Icelandic artist Gabríela Fridriksdottir as an art project for an exhibition. It features Björk in it though. (It's horrible)

The video for Desired Constellation was made by LynnFox as a backdrop for Björk's Greatest Hits tour, together with videos for Unravel, Pluto and It's In Our Hands.

it's beautiffull album, a great work whatever you think, really personal and inventive.. it's surely weird and odd but stay really melodic..
bjork may try to find the limite of her own genius, this strange land made of ice and fire...

for me it's quite normal than some people find this album a bit odd, it's a personal one and really not made with the soap'industrial'prod that many give us to heard..

Thanx you daniel for the response!
and another question: Have you noticed that Bjork's music is all about hair, eyes, teeth, hands, mouth and fingers? I mean, she is so corporeal (corporal en español), she writes about many human body parts. That's a thing that I love about her! because not many people is so minimalistic with the universe of the lyrics and it seems that she only sees the human body to compose something. The music is made with many drums, sounds that you can create hiting your body or with your feets agianst the floor.
Also she is so constant with the lyrics, they are so simply. And I don't know why I can't help listening over and over again her music...
So, do you know why Bjork loves talking about human body's part, specially the hair. I think that the main character in her videos and album pictures is the hair... she is so artistic with it.

I can only listen to Medúlla when I am in a certain mood, but it's great nonetheless. I love her voice and it's a great album to appreciate it. My favorite song is Vökuró and it's great live too.

VöKURó

Bærinn minn
bærinn minn og þinn
sefur sæll í kyrrð
fellur mjöll
hljótt í húmi á jörð
grasið mitt
grasið mitt og þitt
geymir mold til vors

Hjúfrar lind
leynt við brekkurót
vakir eins og við
lífi trútt
kyrrlátt kalda vermsl
augum djúps
útí himinfyrrð
starir stillt um nótt

Langt í burt
vakir veröld stór
grimmum töfrum tryllt
eirðarlaus
óttast nótt og dag
augu þín
óttalaus og hrein
brosa við mér björt

Vonin mín
blessað brosið þitt
vekur ljóð úr værð
hvílist jörð
hljóð í örmum snæs
liljuhvít
lokar augum blám
litla stúlkan mín

Oh! I found it! ut was hard but here is the translation for vokuro:

Vigil (vokuro)

My farm
My farm and yours
Sleeps happily at peace
Falls snow
Silent at dusk on earth
My grass
My grass and yours
Keeps the earth til
spring
Nesting spring
Hid at the hill's root
Awake as are we
Faith in life
Quiet cold spring
Eye of the depths
Into the firmament
Staring still in the night
Far away
Wakes the great world
Mad with grim enchantment
Disquieted
Fearful of night and day
Your eyes
Fearless and serene
Smile bright at me
My hope
Your blest smile
Rouses verse from sleep
The earths rests
Silent in arms of snow
Lily white
Closes her blue eyes
My little girl
