These books are so funny...

The origine of my name should be :
- waran or garan (means protection)
- hari (means army)
My name is ganier/gasnier/garnier (we don't know the first one, and it changed regularly in the history of my family).
garan-hari
-> garnari : ok
-> garni... : please stop, I am stupid, but this is impossible

The name of my last girl friend :
I will not write her name.
I can just give some info.
It is pretty short.
And the same book tells : this is 'noble' + 'lance'.

:(
I searched inside 3 books, they all say the same thing.

Conclusion : French people 60 years ago (the oldest book was 60 years old) had violent ideas.

I was speaking about my family name (last name ?).
We have books about that.
Family names are interesting, because they change less than the first names... Rather obvious in fact.

Of course, the family name is completely machist.
The world has been machist during many centuries (before I don't know ; in France, family names were not that important around the year 1000), let's do something useful from it.

You mean that the English translation is ditch ?
Hum, maybe too simple.
Do you spell it the same way ?

For example, my name "ganier" sounds like the verb "gagner", but we know that the original form was not "ganier".
Thr original form "gasnier" or "garnier" can mean "stupid man", if you separate it in two words.
I don't like it so much. Of course...
I don't know exactly for the original form. Yet I am sure that these books are telling a false and violent explanation.

Daniel is old hebrew as far as I know... related to all the names that end in -el, which means "God" or something (Gabriel, Michael, Ariel...) Anyway, Daniel should mean something like "God is my judge". Andrés comes from greek (andros) and means "man". Ocampo is a town in Galicia, Spain that my ancestors came from apparently. It means "the field" in Gallego.

This is fun.

@ Kosinus, coz mostly in here or in my culture (or maybe only in my family :)). only the oldest kid got their family or dad's name.

still, they will have my daddy's name or my name, but i prefered my dad's name, my dad's name is Muhadinata. so i'm gonna cut it into Dinata. if i have one daughter, i will named her "Nina Jakarta Dinata" :)hehehe.... it's quite obvious huh? :-)

I am Anya too and as far as I know it's Jewish origin name which mean merciful. I am not Jewish at all!

My surname in translation to English is thresher I suppose. All original Ukrainian surnames don't have any connections to war and soldiers as you, Laaran, have in France. Usually all surnames end at -enko and mean the work people do. Also there really funny examples like names of different things: Sausage, Missthankyou, Ass at last (in translation to English)

Small-Talker
My first name means "gentle" in gaelic. But the name originally comes from Wales and when you translate the Irish word into Welsh it loses all meaning, so I'm not even gonna bother explaining it.

I don't know of any actual meaning to my surname. I don't think it translates to anything. All I know is that it was the surname of a very powerful King up in the north of Ireland in the 13th century, and that my ancestors originally came from up there. Yes, there is a huge possibility that I'm descended from a King.

My awful and horrible name, Spanish for Michael, means "who is like God?" (thanks to the webiste that bugsy posted ). It's stupid IMO.
-What's your name??
-Oh, my name is Who Is Like God?
And my surname is the Spanish form of Nunes which means "son of Nuno".
So don't call me Who Is Like God Son Of Nuno, please

All kings are very powerful ?

All original Ukrainian surnames don't have any connections to war and soldiers as you, Laaran, have in France.
I find another book.
In 1919, my name was connected to waran-her, and they say that means "intelligence".
I hope they will find a new origin soon, connected to food :)

@J-m13
Your country is interesting.
It is so different, here we need the family name for so many administrative papers.
Maybe you have less administrative papers than we do ?
