Hi Mags, do you happen to know what this:http://www.amazon.com/Love-Fool-Cardigans/dp/B0009UZGD2/ref=pd_sim_dbs_m_4/104-7866528-0400762?ie=UTF8 is? It said on the cover "The Original Classic Single Released On DVD Video". but there's no description of its content. what's your (and the band's) take on these kind of releases? how much control does the band actually have regarding label's releases?
yonan32, 2006-09-25 06:18:11
Hello!

I have never seen this before, perhaps it´s a new drive to sell videos to fans?
it´s hard to keep track on all release worldwide. Some times, we´ve been f....d by labels (like when they forced us to accept the Your new cuckoo video) but generally, they like to keep us happy. Still, I think all Universal labels can make own decisions and release stuff like this DVD single. It´s all up to the customer, do you want it? or not?

Dear Magnus, How was Halle?
vi ses, Astrid
Laika-the-1st, 2006-09-24 22:41:44
Halle was great! Very punkrock venue but great audience and the Animal Five made a great show! And I was quite good as a dj too, but the kids ONLY wanted the very latest indie hits. Not even old classics like Brimful of asha or Blue Monday worked on them.
Martin the singer from A5 joined me as MC Shitdrunk and we eventually managed to stir them up a bit. Lots of fun, not much sleep would be the label of that weekend I guess.. ;-) And we missed you!

MagnusS, 2006-09-25 21:12:53
Just a trivial thing, but I couldn't help but notice a fan mentioned that at the start of Carnival we hear Nina laughing (which I always thought was the case), but I thought I read somewhere (maybe in the Q&A - don't remember) that the laugh is actually coming from Peter. True?

well I must have had plenty of emails that day. And remember, this is mainly an ASK the band section. I answer all q´s´on my own, noone´s perfect you know. ( and I do this on my freetime...)

Hej!
I've seen the movie "Om Gud vill", and it was very very good, and very special. I have a band, and I would like to play "dead leaves on the dirty ground" with them, but where can I buy notes? Is there anywhere I can buy them, or perhaps you can give me the chords, so we have at least something.. Thank you for lots of wonderful music.

Hej Sara!

well try a White Stripes website and ask for the tabs for that song! I am sure someone can help you out there.

...no questions... well many... haha i've been a fan since 1995 and until yesterday i've found out that this page existed (nice fan).... here it is, the question, on LIFE's "rise and shine" the first melody on guitar... what kind of guitar (and amp is that?)... there has been some discussion about it...

ohhh shit man, that´s 11 years ago. I have no idea but welcome to the site!
You´ve missed a lot but there´s plenty of stuff to explore here on cardigans.com.

But I know that Peter used his red Gibson 335 a lot at the time... not sure if we used it on that one. Could be anything really...

MagnusS, 2006-09-20 17:55:47
I`ve just been at the Universal Sweden site. Maybe, it `ll help journalists in future. But it seems to me, the work at the page is not continue. There is no contact phones, e-mails and other ways to connect. There are 2 promotion managers: Annele Hencz and Ulrica Hammar. Are they some of your PR directors? It`s my last question for today and then I`m going to sleep.
Valeria13, 2006-09-20 15:41:21
Yep, Annele is mainly doing domestic promotion, but we worked together for many years. She can help out for sure.

sleep well

cheers for the quick answer Mags, i'll speak to him tonight, hopefully.
oh, and why are you called the cardigans? ;-) (kidding!) funny, I was following that conversation, and I knew what you meant, but i guess from her english that maybe it's not Valerie13's first language? oh well, there's always one, hey? later!
patrickbateman, 2006-09-20 13:26:54
Cool! I am glad I don´t have to learn Russian to be able to follow a band! ;-)
I think we ironed out the misunderstandings by the last email. it´s important to have good relationships with Moscow!

Tja magnus!

Kan verka lite nördigt att fråga detta. Men jag måste bara få veta vad peter använde för gitarr och förstärkare på låten; A good horse. ( long gone before...)!!!

hej!

Carrie-anne, 2006-09-20 13:50:40
Hej!

well I wasn´t that afraid, cause I was the only one with a job. I´m also the only one with a decent work orientated education as a child nurse and recreational pedagogue.
The rest of the guys just finished gymnasium (highschool).
I even worked as a child nurse for 2,5 years before our career took off. But no, you don´t make a lot of money being a child nurse.... But sure, we took a chance by moving to Malmö and give it a go. You need to face some challenges in life. And we were lucky and talented enough to make it work. Thank God! ;-)

Oh, Magnus, thank you again for one more explanation. Don`t think I`m stupid. Just I want to sleep `cause all night I was obserbing stars and meteors( I`m a BIG, BIG fan of astronomy) and then was reading book. And at morning I had to go to the institute…Now I understand you very well. There is no doubt, I`ll study English perfectly and will understand all people from the first time…Thus, Universal Sweden holds your band. Ok! Besides that, when we`re speaking at the site, we can talk fluently. But if somebody wants to make an official interview with band, this man should connect with your management, yeah?
Lera.
Valeria13, 2006-09-20 15:15:33
Yes or go through Universal Sweden, that´s how it works!

MagnusS, 2006-09-20 15:22:42
hi Mags, I finally managed to get a copy of the Animal Five cd, turns out CDON take debit cards too, but it doesn't say that on the website...
I wonder if you would be willing to do a phone interview on a radio station to promote the band, I have a friend who DJs an indie show at a rock radio station on the net, don't worry you won't have to give out your personal contact details, and if you're not sure about the authenticity, go to www.totalrock.com tonight, it's an Irish guy called Diamond Dave, on between 1800 - 2100 BST (provided he's not on holiday). You can always email him direct, but I'll have a word anyway, he's a pretty cool guy, he's Therapy?'s roadie. OK, hope this is not too cheeky, but I really like Animal Five, and I think they need more exposure over here! Thanks Mags.
patrickbateman, 2006-09-20 13:00:32
Yeah sure, provided that the station will play some Animal Five tunes of course! ;-)
Tell him that I am ok with it and write me again so I can get his phone no.

Magnus
MagnusS, 2006-09-20 13:21:46
Ok, I see your self-esteem was offended. Of course, how could you answer if importunate people write such questions…hmm…Before writing that I should read again Dale Karnegy. I`m a bad rhetorician. After such answer it`d better to never send asks. And, certainly, it will not be superfluous to remind someone like me that you “…the biggest selling band in Sweden”. Well, if you`re writing “…and not being in the press unless we have something to say”…so why are you writing: “contact universal Sweden and ask them”? Yeah, until my questions seemed simple and common, there was alright. What a pity.
Valeria13, 2006-09-20 12:31:43
eh I don´t get it.... I meant that it´s very boring to get such a question after being a band for 14 years, I didn´t mean that you would ask such a question. This is getting more and more complicated for no reason. We have closed the shop for Europe and will now only concentrate on US, unless Universal Sweden wants us to do other interviews.
They are in charge of the promotion work.

So, are you mad at me or is it just a big misunderstanding?

Mags
MagnusS, 2006-09-20 13:19:45
ONE MORE QUICK QUESTON : The beginning of "CARNIVAL"
..is that an actual fire cracker that is being lit on fire??? Then after NINA laughs. And , I know that it was on the soundtrack to "AUSTIN POWERS". How was the band contacted for that to be on there?

nikki
nikki_kit, 2006-09-19 16:58:30
I think that´s the sound of a match being lit.
The Austin Powers soundtrack was all business I guess. Their people call our people and then a deal is made. We never knew about it before the movie. Hope we got some money for it though! ;-)

MagnusS, 2006-09-20 10:33:12
hey mags! i heard somewhere that you love reading. if so, can you recommend anything? or what's your favorite piece of literature? in my case i would probably say catcher in the rye (i'm shure you've read it!)
2- you said in a previous question that you'll have vida tranquila por cuatro meses... what are you doing after those 4 months?
3- in the news section there's a clear reference to an rem son... are you a fan?
Thanks!

a.duran, 2006-09-20 03:01:51
Hey

I only read non-fiction since a few years back so I would give some recommendations from that genre, ok?

Ryszard Kapushinski (awfully hard to spell) - A Polish foreign correspondent in Africa and Latin America who´s written many books. Very good!

Paul Theraux- American travel writer, Dark Star Safari, The old Patagonian express and The happy isles of Oceania are my faves.

John Simpson BBC anchor man. He´s written 4 book on his travels for the BBC around the world. Great stuff!

I guess we´ll start working on some new stuff around Christmas, but that´s just an estimation. We all need to wind down now to get energy for another 1,5 year work on the next album. That´s the length of an album campaign you see.

Yeah I like R.E.M. but I am not a huge fan, I like their great songs, thats´s all.

MagnusS, 2006-09-20 10:32:06
Hello, Magnus. Thanks for explanation. But I still want to determine some details. Well, if I`m a journalist…By the way, do you HATE journalists? Many other famous people don`t respect them and consider them to mercenary scribblers. Often people forget about differents between reporters and analysts, writers and critics…A lot of representatives of mass media try to find a sensation and disgraces (star`s divorce, death from drugs, etc.). They broke into privacy life. As for me, I start working at TV. But I don`t run for scandals! If your band had an official phone number for mass media, could you agree to a small interview? And, of course, your press- secretary would claim to declare press accreditation?
With respect, Lera.
Valeria13, 2006-09-20 08:14:09
Hey!

No I don´t hate journalists at all. I just find the 12 year old question " why do you call yourselves The Cardigans ?" the laziest and dumbest question ever. And we´ve heard that 10000000 times. The tour is over at the moment and I think we only do interviews for USA at the moment, the record came out there yesterday you know. But contact universal Sweden and ask them!

We have been saved from creepy gossip journalism, mainly because we live in Malmo, not Stockholm. Perfect to be the biggest selling band in Sweden and not being in the press unless we have something to say.

MagnusS, 2006-09-20 10:26:04
Just curious, do you ever read reviews of your own albums? If so, does it piss you off when they're bad or the reviewer totally seems to not get what you were trying to accomplish? For example, so many reviews I've read have stated that "And Then You Kissed Me" is about spousal abuse, when it's pretty obvious to me that the song is meant to be taken metaphorically.

Another silly question, do you get freaked out seeing yourself on TV?
duh5, 2006-09-20 08:34:32
Yes and yes. I don´t like watching myself at all, tv is the worst, both audio and video!
And yes we read reviews and we get pissed form time to time. But then again, we live with the album in our lives and one tend to get kinda one eyed. The journalists have their agenda, perhaps 5 albums to review in one day and so on....

Kissed me 1 and 2 are both metaphorical and made up stories. I very much doubt that Nina has experienced it on real life (or any of our friends I hope)

MagnusS, 2006-09-20 10:22:43
Mr Sveningsson, what did you mean when you`d written at morning: “That´s far far better than a journalist who start an interview by asking so, why do you call yourselves The Cardigans? Then you just wanna walk out the door and leave them to guess the answer” ??? It seems to me, you were angry with me :( I didn`t want to write bad question.

Valeria13, 2006-09-19 16:15:47
oh no no no, I didn´t mean it that way, quite the opposite Lera!
Some journalists are very lazy, but your quesiton was very original. I have never
gotten that one before. So nothing to worry about!

Hello from Minsk again!!
Guys it was really cool, you are first band who made open-air fest in our strange(misterius?) country.
But a some questions about Nina. About her harmonica, if be correct:
1) Which model of her Harmonica?
2) Which Harp-manufacturer she prefer ?
3) How long she studying this instrument? How you think, is she a good harper?
I love you all! Your music is magnific... Please come back to Belarus, in this time you get big army of fans, "and god, i know, i am one...."
Cheers! (sorry for ugly English, its my shame)
Tunick, 2006-09-18 18:45:46
hey, these are the answers from Nina:

1. Mostly Lee Oscar, but I have a lot of them, in most keys you need.
2. Lee Oscar!
3. I have been playing for about four years and it's really embarrassing that I haven't improved my playing more...

Thanks for asking! XOXO Nina
MagnusS, 2006-09-19 13:14:47
Thanks, Magnus! Your translation helped me to clear my brain:) I just went home from the institute. There our lesson of English is really awful. We learn 10 irregular verbs and read 1 text a week…But I`m trying to study English and want to know it as well as possible. It`s so cool to talk with those people who know the language! For instance, with you:) By the way, when I played in the little rock band, our bass-guitarist talked about growling. Is it special style when the singer screams?
With respect, Lera.
Valeria13, 2006-09-18 13:12:07
yeah growl is what most heavy heavy metal singers are up to. Not my cup of tea...

YOU HAVE A BEUTIFUL VOICE NINA!!! THANKS !!!!

Nina got a cd and dvd by Elis Regina, but other than that I think I am the " expert " on Brasilian music. Not that I am an expert, but compared to the other guys in the band.
I have made them like some Jorge Ben tunes for one. They are not too much into non-english music whereas I got plenty of african-latin-brasilian records in my Ipod.
They need to learn! ;-)

Hello, Magnus. I knew about this site 2 days ago. And now my head is full of different questions! Because two days ago you wrote mefor my first letter: “yeah, everyone can ask as many times they want! As long as the questions are good! ;-)” Suddenly I `ve just thought about one delicate thing. You write answers every day. Have someone sly fan ever used these answers for his business? For example, for interview? Thus, such people break the law about authors` rights, yeah? If someone nasty man would like to sell it to yellow magazine? Have such situations ever happened with you or your friends?
Valeria13, 2006-09-18 18:05:13
I don´t know. Many journalists read the answers here to make a question, which is cool. It means that they´ve done some research. That´s far far better than a journalist who start an interview by asking " so, why do you call yourselves The cardigans?"
Then you just wanna walk out the door and leave them to guess the answer...

hi magnus,
im a big fan, well not really im only 5ft9 haha *god im funny* but anyways i was wondering what bands do you listen to at the moment and what are youre major influences?
good job with the website too, you respond really quicky which is very good of you as im sure you have other stuff to do.
Tom, England
thatguy, 2006-09-18 21:40:50
Well I don´t know about the others at the moment, but for me:
My Ipod this week:

Colder- Crazy love EP and Heat
Brian Jonestown massacre- Tepid peppermint wonderland
Clinic- Walking with thee
Some Brasilian Tropicalia stuff that I bought in Sao Paulo
Hope Sandoval- Bavaria Fruit tree
Montys Loco- Man overboard

As for inspirations, well we´re so ego that our main source is ourselves!
Whatever Peter and Nina come up with, we mould to what we feel like. That´s when we need inspiration from outside. Only as production and arrangment ideas, not for songwriting per se. We´ll see which style we´ll go for next time. You never know...
