Question 1: Nina, a friend of mine used to live in your building in Malmo and I saw you once when I was visiting. I was too shy to say anything. Would I have annoyed you if i said something, like "hej" or "I think you are the best"? I often wondered if I made the right choice.

Question 2: When I hear many of your tracks, I feel like I am in Wyoming. I am not sure that there is a good reason for this, as to the best of my knowledge you have no ties to said state in the U.S. However, I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on this and why this may be - for example, is there perhaps some subliminal message the Wyoming Tourism Board has convinced you to place in many of your songs?

I am a long-time fan. I really love your work. Please come to Boston again soon! You are my favourite band.

best,

Ashbloem

Hej!

We donīt know too much about Wyoming either, itīs in the far mid west or the Rockies plains right? Maybe itīs the open and sometimes sad atmosphere in the songs right that does it right?

I think youīd be ok to say Hello to Nina, she doesnīt bite.. well sometimes.
I think generally people get too wound up whenever they meet a famous person.
My best advice (from some experience) is just to breathe deeply and be yourself,
be a normal kind human being. donītīover do it or try to cover up your nervousness with a bad attitude. Then she might have felt a little corned if you two met in her house. Better to do it on the street then!

Hey!
I'm glad to hear that DBYD is the next video!
It'll be nice to see what it's like, please, please, please can you put the video on here when it's finished!
And the answer to the question you asked me before about the Been It video is: yes, it's very good just like all of your videos!

Where are you all at the moment? Are you in Sweden?
(Very random, I know!) :-)
xRiotPixiex, 2005-12-06 18:47:22
I am sure Magnus J and Universal will put it up here when itīs done.
We are in Sweden right now , just chilling. Very nice actuallly!

Hey Guys! Saludos desde Mexico... Seriously!; i canīt wait to see you play in here. I just want to know if there is a real chance that you are going to come in the tour.

Another question; your album "the other side of the moon" is still on sale??? i've been searchin in some recordstores in mexico ("mix up" and "tower records" have you hear about it?) and they say that is no longer on sale.... is the only one cardiganīs cd that i don't have.... is some way to get it???? Thanks for the attention.

The cardigans rules!!!!!!!!!!!!
Johvany, 2005-12-07 05:25:56
I donīt know about Other side oof the moon, itīs a japanese cd so maybe it could be tricky to get. Try and search www.amazon.jp for it!

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-07 10:29:37
Is the new cardigans new album is available in Singapore music stores?
Shidee, 2005-12-07 08:01:03
I donīt know, I havenīt been there in my whole life. ;-)

The next video is Donīt blame your daughter and the script is being done now.
We hope to bring along some famous Swedish actresses, but I donīt know which yet. And Nina said that I will be dressed in an evening dress and high heels...
Guess that part came on the 2.nd page of the script, I never made it that far... ;-)

Magnus

Hey Magnus and/or other Cardigans,
Just wanted to comment that although I already wrote my review of your album (and it is positive), I've listened to the album again this morning and it continues to get better each time! I think you're trying to hypnotize me (in a good way!)
Also, I'm yet another fan who saw you in Dallas in August '04 and look forward to seeing you return!
My question has to do with backing vocals (the liner notes in my copy of SEG don't discuss this).
Does Peter do any singing this time? I don't hear his voice anywhere or is he just covered by the many voices of Nina? If not, why no Peter vocals?
I think his voice really adds to the overall band sound. It also makes it sound more like Cardigans and not just Nina and a band. (Not a criticism of Nina's voice by any means!)
Hope this is a nice geeky question for you! ;-)
God Bless,
Dale
Bac, 2005-11-02 16:21:33
We like geeky questions!
I donīt know, maybe Peterīs singing a little bit, I canīt remember. I guess heīs blended in Ninaīs massive overdub campaign? ;-)
Guess we didnīt state that since we only give credits to people outside the band.

I might even sing live next year, weīll see how that goes.... :-)

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-06 18:11:43
Hey

Plenty thanks for the signing work at Fotbollsgalan. One of them made a great success in Varberg, and the other one is about to begin the last part of it's long journey to the reciever any day.

To the question: Should I bring choco or balloon ride invitations to Nalen? ;) (Or perhaps some free tequila :)
Poa, 2005-12-06 18:04:08
hmm tricky question, I am scared of heights and my waist so maybe tequila? ;-)
I am glad we could help out, such a little thing...as our dear Morrissey once sang.

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-06 18:08:31
Hey, I see Bengt is answering a few questions! Any chance of posting up your drum setup or a little bit about your drumming in general on the site?? For a drum geek? All members could do it! (except the microphones.) I really looked forward to the drum part on the dvd, and while it was super funny and super worth it anyway, it wasn't super informative! Really, where do you put your cowbell? I didn't see it on German MTV so maybe with a pedal? Or is it from a DAT tape? :)

Something all Cardigans can answer: have you met many musical heroes after being in the business for so long? Do you have any surprise celebrity fans that really like you?

Magnus, you do a fantastic job. Despite your warnings the questions about the tour seem to continue, however.

New album is awesome. It is really starting to convince me that it's better than LGBD :0

Thanks,
Tom.
v.rockline, 2005-11-03 00:09:07
Hey!

I am thinking of making short movies from the rehearsal space next year, so all gear geeks will have full info on the stuff we use. Bengtīs drum clinic wasnīt very imformative but very fun to do, heīs a comic genius! The cowbell is on tape, itīs real real tricky to play that while doing the tom-tom thing at the same time.
Musical heroes, yeah Ozzy, Beck, lots of Swedes of course, Lambchop, Tindersticks, Tom Jones and many more. These we call friends in the business, then many short encounters backstage etc. Itīs one of the previliges at our work! :-)

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-06 18:06:37
hey guys,

first off I have to give it up to you guys for taking the time out of your busy rock-star lives and answering these questions, especially you magnus (I stopped typing and clapped for thirty seconds at this point). I was just wondering about your song-writing method; I personally always start with guitar melody, then think up the vocal melody and finally lyrics last. I am dying to know the method employed by such musically-intelligent people as yourselves, the sheer originality of your sounds and especially how they change from album to album is truly inspiring. to completely succeed at the cool, badass artistic sound of gran turismo, the light, sunny sound of life and slightly different first band on the moon, the profound passion of daylight and now the new album shows a kind of boldness, courage, and pure talent that I can't find in any other great band, not even in any of my other favourite bands. you will stand the test of time.

thanks for your time,
zan

Hey!

Thanks for your praise, we hope to stand the time too! Weīll see if youīre right.
I answered a songwriting q just half an hour ago, see if you can find it?

take care

MagnusS, 2005-12-06 17:59:08
Nina, vad betyder frasen "you're cutting diamonds with a rubber knife"? ÄLSKAR den låten. kramar nyfiken
misshelena, 2005-11-01 16:41:52
Hmm Maybe that you are trying to solve a situation with the wrong tools. Like putting band aid on a cancer? Itīs just my guess though. I might be soo wrong.

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-06 17:54:52
Do you argue alot during rehearsals?
Who is the most argumentive member of the band?
When you rehearse do you talk in Swedish or English?
xRiotPixiex, 2005-11-06 01:07:32
Of course we talk Swedish! The Spinal Tap effect would be real high if weīd talk english donīt you think?
For some reason Peter often win debates, I wonder why? heīs the youngest and should listen to us elders more often! ;-)
Bengt and Lasse are usually quiet, which leaves it to me and Nina to debate him.

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-06 17:52:44
hey Cardigans,
i love the sound of your recordings, seems like you guys really like vintage gear. Recording question: How do you get that great vocal tone on Nina? Yes, besides being a great singer, what kind of mic, pre-amp, compressor do you use? Gear question: The bass guitar on your recordings often sounds "McCartney"-ish, please enlighten me. You can tell me, I can keep a secret.
anyway, keep up the goodness.
LesMooney
LesMooney, 2005-11-10 02:24:16
Oh I wish I knew more about gear and recording techiniques. Guess weīll have to do another bonus dvd with just geek talk? ;-)
About Ninaīs vocal stuff, maybe check www.gulastudion.com to find what kinda stuff they got for vocals? The McCartney thing is probably Toreīs semi-acoustic Hagstrom basses, very slim neck and super easy to play. They might not work live but great in the studio. Drip drop teardrop is one of the tunes I used it on. I also used ī66 Pbass, ī74 jazzbass and a old Rickenbacker.

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-06 17:50:51
Hi, I'm writing this from Japan.

Your latest record is amazing. The song is of course beautiful and the sound
becomes more rock than ever. i also love this production.

By the way, I would like to ask you about your song writing process.
From where do you start writing songs? From drum beats?Chord progression?
Or singin' melody? guitar riffs?
Maybe you can start everywhere and it dpends on each songs.
So, I hopefully want you explain the "process" as specific as possible.

P.S. I'm looking forward to see yr shows in Japan.
keigo, 2005-12-06 13:32:09
Hey!

Well I think Peter usually sits with his guitar in his lap, playing along and then humming some kinda melody to it. The sometimes it starts with a guitar riff, like
MFG and Fine wine, theyīre very similar in their structure by the way.
Then Peter makes a simple demo and show it to us, itīs usually pretty bare and leaves a lot room for our interpretation. Which is good of course, the band really formed each song in the studio. Thatīs where the fun part starts, how to sculpture each song into the style.

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-06 17:05:20
Dear band members

I'm a great fan of your music, but there is one thing that has been bugging me when I have seen some of your live performances. In the shows I've seen it seems to me that Nina is not singing live. I dont' know if it's true or who's to be blamed. If it's true, I feel that it's not a fair thing to do since your fans have paid good money to see a live performance.

Best wishes

/John
Kabala, 2005-12-06 16:33:31
Well sometimes we do playback things, on tv shows and stuff.
On our concerts, everything is live of course. Well maybe an extra tambourine or so on tape.... So donīt worry about the liveshows, no fake there!

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-06 16:59:06
hey!
i m ur bug fun from Serbia!
there is not so many people that loves ur music here, probably beacuse u didnt advertise well in here, but maybe i m wrong, maybe they r just wiating for ur comeing here
do u plan it anyway?
it would be great, dont u think?
marco
markoarhi, 2005-12-06 10:17:17
Yeah maybe, donīt know if Universal has a Serbian office? We for sure havenīt been down to Belgrade putting up posters for the record. ;-)
Maybe a festival this summer?

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-06 12:45:18
Hello from France, I like very much your music, your specific sound and Nina's sensual voice. I have got all your records and I have just bought your DVD "live in london"(it was hard to get it in France).I just want to know if your band has made other Dvd or if you will soon make anotherone(maybe during your new tour?). Thank you for your answer.Olivier
EBNER, 2005-12-06 10:41:39
Hey!

No thatīs the only DVD out there, we hope to make a new one this year but weīll see if Universal finds it interesting and lucrative enough!

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-06 12:43:48
Hey.

You should really give Mew a call and get together once more and play on KB Malmö. I saw that gig when they supported you. I think that's the only time when I felt like the support band was going to kiss the main act's ass...and they did...but then the main act (you) kicked your own ass and it was GREAT!

So is there any chance to see Cardigans on KB?

and.. have you listened to Mew's latest album?

ta-ta!

Marcus
berguv, 2005-12-04 14:01:55
Yeah the mew guys were sweet! We shall consider this, but arenīt there any Swedish bands we should promote instead? The Danes can do it for themselves! :-)

Hi Magnus! Hi are you???
I'm brazilian and I LOVE The Cardigans...
Well, I would like to know about some demos of 93... You made a version of "Fine" and two songs I don't know the name... (Something some "Simon Says" and "Celebration")
Where did you play these songs and what are the oficial names ???
There are more demos???
Please aswers me...
Thank u
naylor., 2005-12-04 20:26:10
The titles are correct, theyīre from a demo we made in 93. How the hell did it find itīs was down to Brazil? ;-) There was one more demo with Rise and Shine, Pooh songs and some more. Guess weīll have to find these whenever we release that giant box set of ours! We recorded these songs in Bengtīs parents house, in the basement where we rehearsed. it was cold as hell there in the winters.

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-05 17:28:41
:-( red wings just lost
but thank's for answering anyway!
i didn't know about your column...bookmarked it now. i don't know anything about the swedish hockey league but it was interesting and fun to read!....it made me research some stuff about forsberg which actually led me to my next question:
did you see some nhl players play in sweden during the lockout? if so...did ya enjoy it/magic moments you want to share...i definitely would have.

and i know the broadcasting times of the nhl are crazy for us europeans...me as a german ;P
hm, if you don't mind i'll throw up a hockey question every now and then ;-)

best wishes, .still.
.still., 2005-12-05 02:13:40
Yeah last season was super great here in Sweden, well except the fact that our team HV71 didnīt make it to the play offs. We won the year before and now weīre in the lead so... Plenty of the other clubs had more luck with returning top players from NHL or they scouted the market better.

I watched a lt of games on tv and caught one or two live, great to have Forsberg, Zetterberg, Hossa, Alfredsson, Näslund, the Sedin twins, Morrison, Knuble, Chara and many more top players in the Swede league.

I will write a new column soon, got to do a follow up of my predictions you know.
Iīve been too lazy lately... Glad you like it though, Iīm just an amateur ;-)

Black Letter Day:
"Once upon a time, there was a scientist with the nose made of silver [...] and the rest is silence... "

Hola Magnus. ŋCómo estás? How did you come up with the lyrics to this song (especially that last part)? Can you give me an idea of what the song means? I know everyone must interpret art in his own way... but still.

BTW, I couldn't get your autographs back in the concert in NY. [grrrrrrr]Any tips on how to get one? JK =)
carlos_macaws, 2005-12-04 15:08:39
Eh, I think itīs about a weird old scientist from Sweden called Tycho Brahe whom caught syphilis and lost his nose. True! Well before they invented penicillin I guess...

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-04 19:00:20
I would love it if you would do a cover of "Crown of Love" by the Arcade Fire. It is a song that already seems particularly suited to you as a band, and I believe it could be particularly devastating performed by you guys. Just a thought if you need some more B sides or live material! What do you think of Sigur Ros? I have been following their rise the last few years and they are my favourite band bar you and Radiohead. Do you feel any affinity with them as Scandinavians? My friend is studying in Uppsalla at the moment and loves it, I hope to visit your beautiful country soon. Thank you for staying in touch with your fans.
flynnad, 2005-12-04 01:11:08
I havenīt heard that tune by Arcade Fire, I shall check it out.
I went to see Sigur Ros in Malmö two years ago and it was magic, but you need to be concentrated for sure, not the pogo kinda band. Cool to see 900 people in a club totally silent.

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-04 09:22:07
Can i know...what types of guitar effects..do you guys use..the guitars in cardigans songs are cool...
Shidee, 2005-12-04 04:45:00
Oh thatīs too much to answer, Peter spends days and days in the studio to get the right sound and then he spends weeks at programming his Line6 digital amps, sampling the studios sounds and so on. But check the bonus DVD and see Peter show around guitar heaven in the studio!

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-04 09:20:10
Dear Magnus, I know you were pretty big into Reggae and such some time ago. I turn to you as an expert, what would you recommend to someone who just got into dancehall, reggae and ska, if you have any recommendations on this field?
It's not me, it's for a friend;-)
Tack, Astrid

(How was the HKT?)
Laika-the-1st, 2005-12-03 23:44:07
oh thatīs a massive question!
hmm, I like the Soul jazz compilations 100% Dynamite ... and it goes up to 600% dynamite I think. Theyīve also released plenty Studio One compilations with real good stuff. Other than that I love 70īs Burning Spear and of course The Wailers.

There is so much stuff, you guys are in for a treat!

Claes, ninaīs brother tried the HKT and said it was... hideous. I will try it myself tonight!

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-04 09:17:44
hi magnus
thanks alot for answering all the questions...i'm really enjoying this page as there is always something new to discover.
now my question as i haven't read it yet:
i think you are into hockey, right?....do you follow the nhl too?? if so which team and players do you cheer for.
i'm a canuck fan...they got quite some swedish force ;-)

thanks again for making this website so awsome!
.still., 2005-12-04 04:00:09
At last hockey questions! :-)
Yeah I follow NHL aswell, not as much as before, I go to bed earlier and all games are at stupid times in Sweden... But I do like all teams with plenty of Swedes and Vancouver is one of them! Detroit is another. I even write about hockey on www.insidehockey.com Check it!

Magnus
MagnusS, 2005-12-04 09:13:43
Can you please explain what the song "goodmorning Joan" is all about?
Itīs a very beautiful song though :)
melonzip, 2005-12-01 19:32:01
I think Nina is writing about friends who all have problems in love or life in general.
You know you do stupid stuff to protect yourself from intimacy and emotions.
Not sure whoīs sheīs talking about, it could well be me... ;-)
