Re: Gran Turismo interviews

Hey Mags,
For the fan asking about GT...

There are actually many magazine and TV interviews from the GT era. I have many on DVD, but I think many of the answers you guys gave at the time were a bit guarded and vague. They did often ask, "Where's your bass player?"

I don't think there was a ton of "inside baseball" type revelations, but maybe a little. I know Peter was really into Radiohead and their album at the time (OK Computer) and I think that was a big influence on the sound.

This article tells a good deal behind the music of each song (from Peter's perspective). It's not everything, but a good start!:

Tjenare cardigans, snubblade över era låtar för några dagar sedan och blev som fast. Ni har en stil jag jag har faktist letat efter men inte hittat föränn nu. Men nu till frågan:
Jag undra, har ni typ haft black sabbath som idoler eller något? såg ni covra en del sabbath, är själv ett stort sabbath/zeppelin fan.
Brukar ha riktigt emot covers men ni gjorde en ny feeling i sångerna fast man fortfarande kände melodin, riktigt bra covers faktist.

Flingpignz, 2009-01-26 12:12:05
hej hej!

Hey Mags. You have no concerts with the Cardigans, but do you get together to give corporate shows? I know it's very popular, or you have some contract with record lable wich does't give you to make your own show?

Аnyway, we can organize you solo show in St.Peterburg, or perfomance of any group you play in. Just let me know, when you will ready for it :)
pavlon, 2009-01-26 21:04:40
hej!

We don´t do any shows at all at the moment. The only corporate gig we´ve ever done was in Tallinn, Estonia some years ago. It was quite miserable playing for drunk Scandinavians who all worked at a security company. and there were probably people from Tallinn who would have liked to see us play a regular show there... But they couldn´t get a ticket or didn´t know about it.... I´d love to come back to St. Pete, beautiful town! Tallinn too!

Hi Magnus! I already wrote this, but you didn't answer me, so here I go again! :P
Could you put again on MySpace these tracks? Please!

Thanks a lot if it's possible!

Just watched and enjoyed "A Camp" on SVT2. Mmm... Najs!
Still, before I get too old and dementious, I'd like to send U an example of a song/riff I actually wrote & performed back in 1978. TRUE! Sounds a bit like...??? Curious? Me too! ('bout your reaction) Some of my friends 've forced me to, at least/last, pass the tune/recording to your free minds.

Hope U got my e-mail adress, gimme a safe line to distribute ONE *free-of-virus-mp3* just to get your reaction. ? Pleez? No way I'll drag U to court! Just a funny co-incidence, in my opinion... Luv Ya!!!

Hi guys,

A belated thank you for the 2CD Best Of, a brilliant release.

I was wondering if there were any plans to release a DVD compilation of your music videos?

best from Edinburgh,

today and I found this:

Could you tell us what it's about ?

oh, we did that back in early 94. It´s from the student tv in Lund. It was very cheesy to make even then... Now it´s painful... ;-)

Hi Mags :)

The first time I heard The Cardigans was in 1998 before going to college MTV broadcasted "my favourite game" hehe. This song is still playing in my head now :) Then i went to your concert in France at Bataclan. It was overcrowded ! Since 10 years passed from this song, and i am now a music producer. I know that you are very open minded, so I want to ask the band if it is possible to do a Cover version of "my favorite game" ? Our singer did a snippet, and she has a cool clean voice :) Can i send you this snippet in pv so you can decide for an approval ?

Take care
Alex
gamani, 2009-02-02 22:03:53

You don´t need our approval to do a cover! Just do it man! ;-)

MagnusS, 2009-02-05 08:45:03
hi man, let's just get to the point of what we (well i assume most fans) want: VINYLS!

can't you get to re-release all your albums in vinyl? (remastered, hopefully,, not direct from CD copy)

i think some bands do that, releasing vinyl versions of their albums not on their label but on some other label.

it'd be costly of course, but you can always make them limited edition and charge a bit more, i know i wouldn't mind :) how about doing a quick poll of how many fans would like a boxset of all Cardigans album on vinyl, then release them as demanded? i'm sure it's going to be 500+ easily
yonan32, 2009-02-03 06:27:16
Hey!

I would love such a thing for sure. But I think it´s unlikely since we no longer got a Universal contract. The vinyls were all made in UK so we can´t even make this proposition to the people of Stockholm records whom we´ve been working with for 14 years. I´ve been starting to collect vinyls again, think lots of people would like to get our old albums on vinyl. Maybe some indie label will buy the rights from universal?
Like for the Nico Chelsea girls vinyl album I got recently. That´s not from MGM, but a small label called 4 guys with beards...

but all in all, a great idea man!

MagnusS, 2009-02-05 08:44:25
you guys have always seemed to grow and shift and try new things, and honestly, you always seem to do it with ease. as an artist myself, i'm wondering what sort of choices are made prior to records as far as musical direction. is it agreed upon before writing, or is it just what comes out. for the band i play in, in 8 years of playing we have an obsession with shifting and changing, and it always feels natural until we release it and the light of the listeners is shed on it. is there any fear that accompanies writing, recording and releasing a new record? you are one of my most favorite bands and any input or advice would be much appreciated! check out some music if youre bored

jarrod
jarrod, 2008-12-06 21:32:09
Hej Jarrod!

Well fear is always present! ;-) There´s always tension in the studio, even if we get along real well nowadays. We discuss the new path before playing the songs in order to know which we way we think we´re going. During the SEG recordings, we wanted to get away from what we though was our best effort ( LGBD). Not sure if we did the right thing, but doing the same thing over again sounds like a failure in itself. I think Peters songs and Ninas voice let us do pretty much what we want to. You guys will still hear it´s us if you know what I mean? I like vague music, but I am not sure if we would sound better that way. Peters songwriting is crystal clear, even more so now that he´s been trying to simplify it more and more. Songs like Don´t blame your daughter and Communication has really a very simple structure, but they work cause they´re so well written. Then Nina wrote some classic words to them.

Something like that!

Hey Mags. You're most welcome. I was really glad that you liked Águas de Março, by Elis and Tom. Their album is rather good indeed. Since you liked that, hope you'll like these aswell. Though I think Águas de Março is hard to beat.

Dear Magnus,
Being a fan for quite some years now, i' ve watched the band closely over the years and even had the chance to see you performing live in Athens (well i' d like to see you perform live again). So when you watch a band for so long you tend to notice the little details. The one that caught my eye is that Bengt most of the times plays the drums sitting on a wooden stool (the ones we use to change a lamp at home) instead of a proper drum throne. Why is that? Doesn't he get tired after a while? I mean playing the drums for 2 hours or so can be tiresome even with the best drum throne. Is it his lucky stool?? :-) Also you mentioned that you play in 8 bands including the Cardies.....which are the other seven and where can we find excerpts of their work??
Love from the South-Panos.-
volpe, 2009-01-21 22:24:01
Hej!

I´ve answered the one about my other 7 bands yesterday, so check that post!
Bengt likes high drumstools! ;-) So for many years, he´s carried around that old yellow drumstool he had when we started the band in 92. I think that someone made him a replica which he could take apart for all tours later on. As far as I know, he´s never liked the regular stools. He prefers the wooden one, perhaps suits his bony ass better! ;-)

Hi! I'm wondering what got you to the sound of Gran Tourismo, so far my favorite album from you. I love all your albums but my favorite song ever is on Gran Tourismo: Hanging Around. The dynamic of this song makes my want to bounce on the walls. This album is just so different from all your other albums... More mechanical and Nina's voice is so in front and textures. I haven't been able to find any interviews about the creation of this album. What were you feeling when recording this album? Many questions... I love you guys!

Hmm it´s ten years ago now, so I really can´t say too much about it. Other than that I wasn´t in the best mood. I think we all were a little upside down at that time. I am sure there must be someone here who has old interviews right? Can someone help us?

Do you have an email address or something? I have this picture...and I want to send to you....!!!

Man, I know it's not something new what I'm going to say but your cover from Iron Man it's just damn good. I first listened to it when I bought FBOTM back in 97 (because of Lovefool...) and it still gives me chills when I listen to it. It's by far my favorite cover from Cardigans and one of my favorite tracks. Ozzy Osbourne must have appreciated that one. Is it your favorite cover too?

Take care,

Gabriel

PS. I'm glad you liked Elis & Tom. =)
Gabrielh, 2009-01-23 16:50:03
I think Ozzy said that it´s his fave Sabbath cover all time! And that´s dead cool.
My fave cover by us is unfortunately unreleased and not even recorded. Peter and Nina sang If I should fall behind (Springsteen) at Bengt´s wedding some years ago. Everyone in that ballroom shed a tear or two. Shit that was the best Nina and Peter has ever been!

hi mags!

i was just surfing through your myspace and really love all the live versions of lgbd. where was the version of 3.45 no sleep, recorded?
i think it's even more beautifull than the album version! ; )

and how do you keep practice scheduels with 8 bands!
i'm in 2 and have a hard time planning everything!
and what kind of genres are you playing now?

keep making great music!
greetings jaimy!
garfreek, 2009-01-23 21:53:02
Hej!

I think that live version is from Riga Latvia. Or possibly Kiev (Kyiv) Ukraine. I like very much aswell, real nice feel to it.
You know I don´t really have a day job, so that helps keeping a schedule. And some bands aren´t really active that often. Such as this band! ;-)

You can check them out yourself!

search Myspace for Lotta Wenglén, Cilihili, Florian Horwath, Up the Mountain and en afton. The last one is our club that we run, each month a new musical hero to tribute. I put up some real nice live vids of our The Kinks evening on youtube. Then Righteousboy and Cardigans. Only seven... Oh, no one more. I´ve joined an instrumental soulband aswell! So Eight! ;-)

Take care

hej mags!

it's me again, ninas double. ;) it's so cool you're answering all that stuff...! hats off to you!

so since we're on the subject...
i have just seen some pictures of nina and she's wearing a necklace that looks like the head of a lion or a tiger or something... i know it's another verrry girlish thing to ask, but do you know where she got that from or could you maybe ask her?! :S i really like that one too and would like to know even though i assume i couldn't afford something like that...

and just in case, don't worry i don't plan to turn into a perfect nina double one day, not stalking either, not that kind of fan! =D

just loving you guys and your music... i'm looking forward to new albums, new shows... i saw you last year in germany (wiesbaden, schlachthof, btw i was standing by those shuttoff things and there was a gap through wich nina patted my hand and you said "hi!", in case you remember... i was thrilled :P hehe) i know there are no plans set yet, so i'm waiting patiently though curiously... =)

hope everything is going well for you guys!

cheers!

JanaNadja, 2008-11-10 00:02:39
Hi!

The necklace is by a danish designer and produced by a company called ARENA Copenhagen. I wore it until it broke, and then I couldn't find it again, but you might be lucky. I know they made it in silver as well. Love from Nina
MagnusS, 2009-01-21 08:31:48
what does the future hold for he cardigans,is it over or do you have new ideas.i don't think another album like super e g would sell very well and you can't go back to doing albums like the early days.I agree that LGBD was your finest as i showed just how musicly telented you all are.Im thinking you think we've been there done that and thats that or am i wrong THANKS Jason
JasonM, 2008-12-16 01:47:52
Hej Jason!

Noone sells any albums or legal downloads anyway, so I don´t think it matters really. But sure, you ( we) would need some big hit to sell a lot. But that also takes months of promotion work around Europe, US and Japan. And I know for sure that they boys in the band don´t wanna miss their adorable kids for too long. So we´ll see what happens. I play in 8 bands now, including The Cardies, so I keep quite busy! ;-)

Hey, big fan here...I have three questions. First any chance of a USA tour? And second, was it hard not getting the respect that you clearly deserve in the usa? And Lastly what is in the water in Sweden? Between you guys and The Hives it seems Sweden has a lock on great music, for me anyway. Keep up the goods, loved the best of album. thanks...Jerry
TickTockRock, 2009-01-03 16:03:26
hej Jerry!

No tour anywhere, but you might be able to catch NIna on tour with A camp over there!
We worked our asses of back in mid and late 90´s. Guess that´s why we got a fanbase over there, even now. Sweden has great music! This last year it´s been lots of female soloartists breaking thru. I dearly recommend Jenny Wilson, Robyn, Frida Hyvönen, Maia Hirasawa. Then some boys like José Gonzalez, Soundtrack of our lives and so on. Check their Myspace sites, you might find something new!
